John 17:
What is it and how did it start?
John 17 was birthed in 1982 as a monthly prayer
fellowship of pastors. John 17’s outreach to pastors was deepened in 1999 by
the first Montgomery area Pastors’ Prayer Summit. Thirty-three pastors,
pastoral staff, para-church and other ministry leaders came together to pray
for four days at Blue Lake Assembly. God used this time to break down
barriers in the relationships of these men who came from various
denominations and organizations. Through the Pastors’ Prayer Summit, God
planted in their hearts a passion to see the city of Montgomery and all of
central Alabama trans-formed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
This season of prayer together resulted in a covenant and mission statement
articulating the pastors’ commitment to the vision God had given them. Since
that time, John 17’s impact has grown and developed into a citywide movement
God is using to strategically impact Montgomery with the message of Jesus
Christ.

Our Structure
John 17 is led by a service-oriented team of
pastors and ministry leaders called a servant leadership team. The functions
of the servant leadership team include the following:
To cast a vision for the whole church, city and Gospel initiative
To provide a bridge linking every part of the Church of Jesus Christ
To identify problems or tensions between various parts of the “Body” and
begin facilitating relationships God can use to reconcile these gaps in the
wall of the city
PRAYER
John 17 pastors are empowered by the Lord
through times of united prayer. The prayer time is modeled after the
Pastors’ Prayer Summit and includes singing hymns, reading a scripture (with
no commentary) and praying with one another in a way that is common to all
denominations.
FELLOWSHIP
John 17 pastors grow in love for each other as
they break bread together over a fellowship lunch each month and as they
share intimately with each other at Pastor Prayer Summits.
SERVING TOGETHER
John 17 pastors serve the Lord together during
city-wide events such as March for Jesus, Project Hope and the National Day
of Prayer. Many also swap pulpits or have joint services with churches of
different races or denominations as they grow in love and unity.
